WMS 'E-Mail Discussion Group'

Introduction

An e-mail discussion group exists for the exclusive use of Welsh Mines Society 'Members' and 'Newsletter Subscribers'. It has been set up to allow members to be easily contacted by the officers of the WMS on society issues, and enable prompt discussion and communication of news between members. Members are encouraged to use this service to raise research related queries on Welsh mines and quarries, and also to assist them in arranging independent field visits (i.e. those not organised by the society).
(Note : This service is intended to supplement, not compete with, existing discussion groups such as the UK based Mining History Network discussion group as moderated by Peter Claughton, and the Aditnow community.)

How does it work ?

If you're new to e-mail discussion groups, they go something like this :

Once you have subscribed, and your membership of the group has been confirmed, you will receive copies of all e-mails posted to the group (unless you elect otherwise) - if you reply to a message or send in one of your own, then likewise, all members of the group will receive a copy.

All e-mails can be sent, received, and replied to by using your usual e-mail software, whether from your PC, laptop, phone or tablet, or using an on-line service. (There is no need to login to Yahoo to send or receive messages.)

The group is moderated and administered by the WMS webmaster to ensure that communications are of a suitable quality and we don't end up with meaningless junk in our in-boxes. Also, as the membership will be restricted to WMS members, you should not receive any 'spam/junk' e-mails, commercial or otherwise, through the group.

There are also 'files' and 'photos' sections where info can be placed and accessed by any member, plus there is the facility for the administrator to run on-line polls.

Guidelines

Please don't :

Post attachments such as images etc. to the list, but place them in the 'files' or 'photos' sections and send a link instead.
Note that unduly large images, i.e. over 1.0 MB, may be resized to optimise the available storage space.
Send e-mails which are unlikely to be of interest/value to the group as a whole. For example, please don't use the group to continue a discussion which is only applicable to a single recipient, when a PM (personal e-mail) would be more appropriate.
Type in UPPERCASE, the equivalent of shouting - not good form !

Please do :

Introduce yourself to the group, with a brief note about your interests, current projects etc.
Post e-mails relating to Welsh mines and quarries &/or the Welsh Mines Society.
Show respect to the views of others.

How To Join

Please print off, and read to the end, before clicking on the links !

If you :

Do have a 'Yahoo ID', then log into Yahoo with that and your password.
Do not have a 'Yahoo ID', you will be asked to create one. Make sure that you 'un-tick' the box which allows Yahoo to send 'promotional' e-mail to you !

Click on the 'Join this Group' button.

You will then be asked to select a few different options which define how you interact electronically with the group. Note that when setting 'Message Delivery' options, the selecting of 'receive no e-mails' is generally discouraged as that tends to defeat one of the fundamental reasons for setting up the group in the first instance !

Once you have clicked on the 'join' button, your application will need to be approved prior to getting access to the group and its files. This may take up to one or two days depending upon the availability of the administrator.
