As to the programme of events, this was as follows:

  • Saturday 23rd June - Moel Tryfan Slate Quarries - Leader Dr Gwynfor Pierce-Jones

Met at 11:00 at the Inigo Jones Slate Works LL54 7UE at SH 471 551, (view road atlas or OS Map), near Groeslon on the A487 Caernarfon to Porthmadog road.  Some cars were left here to travel by convoy via. a stop at the Fron & Old Braich Slate Quarries mill buidling at SH 513 549, (view OS map), to the Moel Tryfan slate quarries at NGR SH 513 558. (View OS map).
The walk was led by Dr Gwynfor Pierce-Jones who talked about the history and development of the different quarries here.   Gwynfor is the mineral agent for the Caernarfonshire Crown Slate Co., who own the Moel Tryfan site and are presently working parts of it.   As quarries go this is a very picturesque one and the views over to Anglesey are impressive.   The walk was about 3 km.   The trip left a little spare time in the afternoon for members to do their own looking around the area, where there are lots of possibilities.

  • Saturday Evening

Dinner, 19:00 for 19:30, at Padarn Lake Hotel, High Street, Llanberis, LL55 4SU
Tel. 01286 870 260; E-Mail enquiries@padarnlakehotel.com

  • Sunday 24th June - Britannia Mine - Leaders P. Smyth & D. Seabourne (Underground) & H. Morris (Surface)

Met at 09:45 at the car park in Nant Peris at SH 607 583, (view road atlas or OS map).  We travelled from here on a hire coach to Pen y Pass and walk to the Brittania copper mine below Snowdon along the Miners' Track.
The walk to the mill site was about 6 km and about 9 km for those on the underground trip.   The scenery here is stunning (on a good day - which it eventaully developed into) and is a worthy objective in its own right.
The underground trip involved simple abseiling and SRT and a very tight, but short squeeze at the entrance.  (Unfortunately this was a a little too tight for some members !)  The underground trip with walking in and out took about seven hours, and was worth every minute of it !
